The bulk of aquaculture production throughout Australia falls under 6 main categories, with the first five making up 91 percent of the total:

*In 2001-02, the gross value of production of the five main farmed groups was:

1. Southern Bluefin Tuna
$261 million
2. Pearls $175 million
3. Atlantic Salmon $112 million
4. Prawns $65 million
5. Edible Oysters $57 million

The remaining 9 per cent comprised mainly other Finfish, Freshwater Crayfish and Mussels. Other finfish included Trout, Barramundi and inland freshwater fish, primarily Silver Perch, Murray Cod and Golden Perch.

In 2001-02, trout GVP was $13 million, Barramundi $11 million and Silver Perch $3 million. The production of mussels was valued at $8 million while the production of Freshwater Crayfish (Yabbies, Redclaw and Marron) was valued at $4 million.

Over twenty marine finfish species (other than Southern Bluefin Tuna) have been trialed in recent years.

The main species for which farmed production is now reaching commercial levels is Yellowtail Kingfish.

Production of Snapper and Mulloway could also rise in the future. The other main aquaculture species not already mentioned in which there has been significant investment in recent years is farmed Abalone.
