The Action Plan document is constantly evolving as priorities change and challenges are met. Comments and suggestions for refining the Action Plan are welcome from stakeholders of the Australian aquaculture industry.
The Australian Government, as well as the states and territories, have both driven and supported many areas crucial for streamlining regulations and encouraging growth and profitability for the industry in Australia. The Aquaculture Industry Action Agenda
Australian Government and industry have developed the Aquaculture Industry Action Agenda. The action agenda was a national initiative to help the aquaculture industry successfully meet the challenges and capitalise on its competitive advantages and growth opportunities.
10 key initiatives have been agreed on to drive the industry's future growth, realise its vision of sales of $2.5 billion a year by 2010 and lay the foundation for an extended program of cooperation between industry and government.
The 10 strategic initiatives were:
1. Making a National Policy Statement
2. Promoting a regulatory and business environment that supports aquaculture
3. Implementing an industry-driven action agenda
4. Growing the industry within an ecologically sustainable framework
5. Enhancing aquatic animal health and biosecurity
6. Investing for growth
7. Promoting seafood products in Australia and globally
8. Tackling the research and innovation challenges
9. Making the most of education, training and workplace opportunities
10. Creating an industry for all Australians
Governments and industry have now entered the next stage of working together, to implement the initiatives identified through the Action Agenda process.
Industry will benefit from $1 million funding for the Aquaculture Industry Action Agenda in the 2004 Budget. The recent allocation is in addition to $2.5 million funding in 2003-04 to begin implementation of the programs.
An Implementation Committee, Chaired by Senator Macdonald, Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation and comprising industry, government representatives, independent experts and NGO, has been formed to ensure that they make the most of this opportunity. Over the next 12 months this committee will be actively guiding the implementation of these initiatives and their associated actions.
The fifth meeting of the Aquaculture Industry Action Agenda implementation committee was held in Hobart, 29 June 2004.
The sixth meeting of the Aquaculture Industry Action Agenda implementation committee was held in Canberra, 24 February 2005
The most critical initiative designed to achieve the objectives of the Action Agenda is thought to be the Marketing, Branding and Promotion Project (initially termed Promoting Aquaculture Products in Australia and Globally).
A series of consultancy reports specific to the initiatives identified in the Action Agenda have been provided to the implementation committee. An Action Plan is now being developed to identify the key recommendations, with a strong focus on implementation. The Action Plan will be finalised by the end of the 2004/05 financial year.
